So my father has a cable modem and a router. How can I get into his system remotely? I have no clue where to start so the more details the better.

if the router doesn't forward any ports (this is default) then it is impossible to hack your dad remotely using exploits.

There is no way I can dial in, being as I set it up.

Are there any settings I could change on the router so that I could get in but others can not?

Most routers are not going to have specific rules you can set whereas a certain account/IP is allowed through. Basically routers you can buy everywhere atleast do port forwarding, but as SR said, its not done by default. Your best chance would be to get your router manual. If you do ipconfig /all on your dads computer (at a dos command prompt), you will get his internal IP. Then what you would do is telnet or open a web browser to the router itself (usually 192.168.2.1, but it may be your dads IP and and 1 like x.x.x.1).

Hopefully he hasn't changed the password. But if you look in the manual or on the net, you can find the default router password. From there, you can configure a port to be forwarded to your dads computer, from the internet. If you can limit it by IP range, not common, would be a good idea to do so.

Now, install a remote administration server, wether it be a trojan, vnc, rdp, etc. Change the port it listens on to the port you forwarded from router.

Now goto www.whatismyip.com and get your external IP from dad's ISP connection.

Now go to another computer, using the client for what you installed, enter the IP and port, and you should be able to connect.

reset his router, change the default pass, forward a port to an ftp server you install on his main computer, and then setup a user account, fairly simple.

I am on my university's network. I have SuperScan and do not understand how to gain access to other peoples machine.

I have gotten SuperScan to display the open ports for FTP, HTTP, Post Office Protocol, and Simple Mail Transfer. Are there any other ports I should selectively scan for? How can I connect to there PC's knowing this?

You ask that question as if someone can tell you in two or three sentances. Time to wake up. The ability to compromise machines can not be summed up with one surefire method that works everytime. Getting into another machine requires finesse and knowledge.

So you found open ports, great. Now start learning about the services that are listening on those ports. If it is something like FTP or SMTP go and find the rfc on that protocol and read it (rfc's can be found here ).

If you know exactly how something works then you stand a chance of knowing how to manipulate it or even break it.

See...you're trying to just jump into hacking with a knowledge of 'how to' with no basic knowledge of the underlying system that lets you do the things you can do.

Read some books (Computer Networks, A. Tanenbaum), (Counter Hack, Ed Skoudis), learn some programming, read up on TCP/IP (in Computer Networks book) and read bugtraq and try to understand *every* message; then work on hacking.

Otherwise...you'll get caught.

Its rather quite simple-If you have the username and password then all you have to do is connect to that port with telnet. Now if you don't then you have to learn how to hack and that isn't something you will learn in a day or week. So if you don't dedicate yourself to learning then it is relentless to try to comprise someone's computer without having any knowlegde what so ever.

Dream on...
