A man from Queensland, Australia, who was convicted of possession and cultivation of cannabis, asked for more time to be added to the 18 months he had already served in jail so he could complete a computer course and set up a chess club.

The judge was going to let the man go free but, upon the request, gave him an extra 3 weeks in prison. The defendant had originally asked for an acquittal based on research which suggested the drug was less harmful than smoking and drinking coffee.
