With Verizon launching FTTP(Fiber to the Prim) I see new industrys poping up sooner than later.

1.) Re-fridgerators will go online and they will tie in with Online grocery stores.

2.) 2 phase password technology will become a big industry as bandwidth increases and so dose processor speed.

3.) Cable companys will provide More phone services

4.) Phone companys will get into the entertainment market. This will come in FTTP.

5.) MCI stock(currently at 2cent) will climb again. Maybe after a government bail out.

6.) Encryption will become a huge industry as more homes and offices employe wireless networks.

7.) Google will be beat out by some other search technology. They will then be shuned like napster was.

8.) MP3's will be replaced with WMA files and copy protection will get tougher to beat.

9.) FTTP will be a dominate super broad band power for a while. Then some competing technology will come out.

*FTTP has already started being deployed in parts of Texas. Parts of New England are next. I am not sure on pricing.*

I seem to remeber about a year ago you made a pos about Internet2 and how radical that was gonna be. fibre to every house, blazing speeds facilitating most of what you just regurgitated above. Now a year later there is still no noticable change in the way things are done. I agree that potential is exciting, but nothing is gonna happen over night. No matter how you look at it, barring some cataclysmic act of god, things are going to steadily progress the way they have well into the future. Of course things will get more hi-tech, gadgets fancier, toasters smarter, and a host of other things.

Bottom line, I think you get to excited about every new technology that comes along :p

It will be a slow process. But not as slow as you think.

The FTTP will path the way for Internet2 protocols to emerge on the net. Verizon is starting with 1 million homes this year. That is just verizon. SBC, Bell South, and Verizon are the 3 big players. Well as far as telco's go.

Now, the internet2 is a test network. It is not in the willd so to speak. But they are testing protocols for larger bandwidth. A new TCP/IP stack if you will.

I read those links you posted spanky :p Seems that Verizon is the only major U.S. company to begin serious testing. The other companies will play catch-up if it works for Verizon. I read those links and I don't think I have the full story yet. Could you maybe post some more that talk about what FTTP is, it's implication for the consumer, etc. ? Yeah, too lazy to Google right now. Why do you think Google will be replaced? I just don't understand that prediction based on what I read. My prediction is that people will start having one provider for telephone, internet, television, etc. Thanks for the info!

Okay,

Texas is getting FTTP as we speak. There are 3 packages so far.

5 Mbps download/2 Mbps upload - $34.95

15 Mbps download/2 Mbps upload - $44.95

30 Mbps download/5 Mbps upload - to be announced

Now I must admit, 5 and 15 Mbps are a bit low on the bandwidth for fiber. However 30 Mbps is not a bad start. Combine the Internet 2 protocols with that horse power and you have something.

$44.95 is what I pay Comcast now for 3 Mbps download speed and I think 768 Kbps upload. Might be 384 Kbps Upload.

At 30 Mbps you are almost at DS3(T3) line speed. Now the one thing I am wondering about is how they pland to keep all these lasers from burning out, or how they plan to replace them cheaply and easily.

Texas is getting it now. A test area if you will. Then New England, I think Florida is in there somewhere too. Then Nation wide roll out.

1 million homes this year
2 next
10 the next
and so on
