Last Friday, US District Judge Susan Illston agreed with major movie studios and ordered 321 Studios to stop manufacturing and selling software that allows users to copy DVDs. 321 Studios will still sell its DVD software without this function.

However, it is widely known that people who purchase 321's DVD Copy Plus and DVD X Copy programs can simply download the descrambler from sites off the internet. The retail versions will only allow for copying of home movies and other uses.

The lawyer for the movie studios which sued 321, Russell Frackman, says: "You can't sell the product with a wink and a nod and then tell your users, 'What you need to do is get the ripper (descrambling) component ... from another source."
