Is there a windows based way of password protecting your folders and/or your word doc. or any files for that matter.
I know that there are many programs out there, as I have searched google. But if anyone knows of free software or tips were I could find free software then could you please point me in the right direction.
NOTE: If there is a windows based way of doing this then I would prefer it.

Torn from MS Word Help files: Require a password to open or modify a file When you create a password, write it down and keep it in a secure place. If you lose the password, you cannot open or gain access to the password-protected document.
Open the file. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Security. Do one of the following: Create a password to open
In the Password to open box, type a password, and then click OK. In the Reenter password to open box, type the password again, and then click OK. Create a password to modify
In the Password to modify box, type a password, and then click OK. In the Reenter password to modify box, type the password again, and then click OK.
Also, if you're using the NTFS file system there is a way, through windows, to encrypt files.

Well there is another way i dont know if this will work in xp but it works in 98. What you have to do is :> open Ms-dos and go to the dir you want. :> Then type MD µspecialfolder Then your done! Then in windows when you try and open it you get an error due to the µ ! However if you want to get in you need to remember what keys you pressed to get the symbol. Also if you want to delete it you will have to type DELTREE instead of del. thats it.

Yeah, that doesen't work in any Windows OS above 98SE. And obviously you have to use DELTREE since it's a folder.

if you don't mind the government having a backdoor into your encryption, PGP, aka pretty good privacy works. There is a free version of it even:) You can make a drive with free space to have your stuff there, or you can encryption files/folders separately;/

I just did something really stupid. I protected another word document making a new password and know I dont know what it is. The doc is important (hence I pwl protected it) and I carnt crack the encryption. You said that if you loose/forget it then you can not open it.
Is there someone that does know how to break the encryption?
