When you click a hyperlink in Word or Outlook, the webpage opens in a new IE window -- unless you already have a window open. Then the new link replaces what's currently open in the browser window. So annoying!

Yes, you could just hit the Back button to return to your former page, but that can get confusing when you have more than one IE window open. What if you're not paying attention and the page you're looking for gets buried?

On tonight's "Screen Savers" I'll show you how to force IE to always open a new window when you click a hyperlinked URL, no matter how many windows you already have open.

In IE

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Choose Internet Options from the Tools menu.
3. Go to the Advanced tab.
4. Under Browsing, uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts."
5. Click OK.

Registry tweak

Before making any changes to your registry, back it up in case you make a mistake.

1. Open Registry Editor by clicking Start and Run and typing "regedit" (without quotes).

2. Go to registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.

3. Look for value AllowWindowReuse. If you can't find the value, create a DWORD value for it.

4. Set the Data Value to 0 for "Do not reuse window." (A setting of 1 specifies "Reuse window.")

5. Exit the registry and reboot for your changes to take effect.
