Just finished installing redhat 9 on my server. It's not bad so far...has much of the same looks as RH8 with a few minor cosmetic changes. I haven't had a chance to explore very much yet because i'm been working on getting my ip forwarding thingie working on my damn network. I did notice that you can do the web server in a GUI which is pretty cool.

Anybody else have a chance to try it out yet? I kinda like it so far. I was using rh8 before this, and freebsd4.5 before that.

I have read some reviews on it.

KDE/Gnome are supposed to be more integrated now, and they both are better versions that what was shipped with RH8.

Samba and Web Server, as you said, both have a much better gui.

The package manager STILL SUCKS. Man I can't wait til they get something like apt. I know you can install it, but it would be nice to have it by default and maybe a nice gui. Of course, then there would be less of a reason to join RHN :p

Still no mp3 w/ XMMS, and now I believe Xine is gone too.

I recommend upgrading the Mozilla, read it handles installation of plugins much better, and 1.3.x also adds popup/spam controls.

Also, NVIDIA drivers are supposed to be a [censored] to get to work as of now. So I think I will wait a while.

This is all from what I read, I haven't installed it yet. So if you have more points, or corrections, let me know.

Correction: Just found this out. I assume most of ya know it already.

new NVidia supports RH9 and Mandy 9.1. And on top of that, they have added a linux util that will let you. Also the new util will select the correct drivers for you and install them. Sounds like they took NVchooser.sh and added a nice install. Good deal!

While RedHat 8.0's XMMS does not ship with an mp3 module, (due to some kind of weird licensing shite) you can grab the mp3 module off of of the XMMS site. In fact, this news ids still plastered all over the front page of XMMS' site.

And just to keep this bad-boy on topic, I haven't tried RH8 yet. Like jesus, 8 just came out a couple months ago and now 9? WTF?

[censored] Read Hat,

They put files is very odd places causing some security risks and thier attempts to make installs easier only use up more system resources.

I know I have supported Mandrake for a while now, which is just a RH clone compile for an i586 or higher. But before you choose Mandrake or Red Hat look into where they set up the server files and how that affects your security.

Also look into how they set up LILO and GRUB. 2 more security flaws if a person is sitting at your Box.

What are you referring to with the "files in very odd places causing some security risks"?

Red Hat(and mandrake because they are a modified Red Hat) put server software in different partions and directories than other versions of Linux that stick closer to standards. They do this for speed reasons. However it can comprimise security if you do not know what you sare doing and set it all up wrong.

So you say, but if you set up a server you should know what you are doing...

Okay, but at the same time, Mandrake and Red Hat are geared toward Newbies. See a problem hear? I will post the differences when I have a bit more time.

Care to give some examples of this? I'd like to get a better handle on what you are talking about here Learner.

oh hey, people responded.

As far as security i've never had any problems with it. Gave some "hackers" (if that's what you call um) a few attempts but a few firewall configurations and it's pretty hard to get in. I know red hat is for "lamers" (that's what they are called right?) but I still like it...it's a big jump from the freeBSD box i'm used to working on.
