Hi,
i recently bought the linux distribution Suse Linux 9.1 but i have some problems with the internet connection. I have an external modem and the manufacturer provides information about linux installation. My modem is being identified by the system and when i write some ati commands in a ternimal i get the right response. But... When i try to connect to the internet, the system initializes the modem, dials the number and then nothing. I'm using Kinternet and the message i get is
... pppd[0]:Sending ATM0 pppd[0]:ATM0 pppd[0]:ERROR pppd[0]:--> Bad init string pppd[0]:--> stdin not read/write and $MODEM not set pppd[0]:Connect script failed pppd[0]:Status is:disconnected died:Connect script failed (exit code 8) terminating
I know that the ATM0 has to do with th speaker of the modem. My modem has no speaker, how am i able to stop the system from executing this init string? Is there a file i should edit? Any ideas about what is happening?
Thanks a lot!

The fact is that i wanted a full product, not just one or two cd's. My internet connection is too slow and i can't download a version via net. Also this distribution has two dvd's to install plus a user and an administrator guide. I'm not saying that this is the best distro but at least it supports SATA.
Anyway, any ideas about the problem of the internet?
Thanks again!

Actually SuSE linux has the best hardware support hands down it seems to fully support newer and more exotic hardware before any other distro straight from PnP and when you purchase SuSE linux you also get one free tech support question. I suggest you use yours on this. It comes with 6 compact disks or 2 DVDs. Much more software than with a 2 cd minimal download, which is handy if you have a slow connection and don't want to spend weeks d/l'ing software. The book is crap.

Well guys, the most significant factor is the download time. I wouldn't have bought the distro but with isdn 64k i would need hours waiting...
Anyway i fixed the problem. I edited the file file:/etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-ppp0 and removed the ati commands that caused the problem.
Thanks!
