Well lets get the ball rolling. Even if gizzy says no lecture forum we can publish them in the appropeaite forums. So I nominate the following topics.
  • HTML/Web Design Basics
  • Server side Scripting/Security Telnet
  • Open source vs closed source
  • SMTP/sendmail
  • Annonimity on the net
  • Hacker culture history

Now if you want to do one of these please post here and request the option to do it. I agree with SR in that they should be assigned.

I'll do one on HTML/Web Design - but I also think this could be a team project. I'm not amazing at web design, but I do know my HTML and CSS. Maybe if someone wants to email me stuff they think I should include, I can look over a list of keywords/phrases someone thinks is important and do a google on each of them?

I could also do one on the following topics:
- User/Pass authentication
- Intro to networking
- mySQL & Stuff
- Setting up a website (hosts, ftp, troubleshooting)

Hacker culture history? Man, hell no. What kind of lecture would that be? No real questions can be asked, who would learn anything they couldn't by reading a short text. IMO, that's information (not the word I'm looking for, but you get the picture), not knowledge. These lectures should be imparting knowledge, where the lecture format is helpful.

Just my 2 cents.

Well it would explain why laws are the way they are, who Kevin is, L.O.D., and how the net used to be owned by the people not corperations. History of a BBS. I think things people here should know.

Those are definitely things people whould know, but I see absolutely no reason why it should be done in lecture format.

Again, it's not something that leads to many good replies or questions, like other topics are.

As a text it's a great idea, as a format it's shity

I'd have to side with TBG on this one.

I don't care who mitnick is, to me he's an a-moral loser who got caught (and yeah, I read both sides of the story)

LOD was nice, but that's the 80's bud, this here is the [censored]' new millenium.

If anyone wants to read about that crap, read cyberpunk, the cuckoos egg, good books like that that impart little knowledge (well, the cookie recipie from the cuckoo's egg was fantastic...BUT!)

Just my 2 cents also.

Limit lectures to TECHNICAL TOPICS.

ya, the HTML/WebDesign topic is HUGE. We really should specialize on a specific area when giving a lecture. We don't want these things pages long. However, you may give a series of related lectures to cover an entire broad topic.

And as Scallion said - you may collaborate. More than one person can contribute with this series of lectures. Also, another way to collaborate is that several people submit their material to a single person who compiles it into a comprehensive lecture - again REMEMBER to keep a lecture from being too long - it encourages people to read it.

heh, and although it's not a requirement, I really hope the person who "publishes" a lecture has some english class background for writing structure. wink

And the votes should be done in polls. Otherwise, you just get a mess of opinion. And keep the topics in those polls specific. But I agree with Learner in how the lecture can be put into their proper forum until we get a dedicated forum. A dedicated forum is better cause we don't want to have to search for those lecture gems in the mass of a particular forum. We want it to be consolidated.

yes, please good grammar is needed. I think the person who compiles the text should have good editing/spelling skills. Maybe we should do a vote on that. Also, yeah Curse do a lecture on social engineering. I would love to read it considering I know nothing about SE'ing and ur so l33t at it :x

I think the history of hacking, bbs's, the internet, etc all that learner suggested, I think it is a good idea. If you don't want to read it, then don't. I don't see a reason not to do it, so if someone really knows their [censored] in that are i think they should do one. I think anything that someone wants to give a lecture on should be done. (with the obvious exception of how to get warez, adult content, etc.)

Also, I think until we get a dedicated forum, that maybe we should have a topic naming structure, so people know it is a lecture. such as "Lecture - Title here" or something. then if someone searches for "lecture" then they should all be listed.

Ok my personal choice is as follows, due to its demand.

1. Basics on Unix/Linux
2. Basic Networking
3. Networking Security
4. Writing simple Exploits and implementing them
5. How to use SSH and Telnet
6. VB Programming for Beginners
7. Advanced API programming
8. How to write and manage complex online applications/sites
9. What to look for when debugging apps
10. The Cyber Karam Sutra

hehe and hacker ethics

The use of "hacker" to mean "security breaker" is a confusion on the part of the mass media. We hackers refuse to recognize that meaning, and continue using the word to mean, "Someone who loves to program and enjoys being clever about it."

hey scal, i could help you with the html/webdesign thing. if you give me a certain subject in there i could send you some stuff and you could put it in there using proper grammar and all that. i suck with forms though, so don't ask smile (how do you like that graemlin there eh? <img border="0" alt="[?]" title="" src="graemlins/question.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Alien]" title="" src="graemlins/alien.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Bang]" title="" src="graemlins/bang.gif" /> )
