Ok well in a Sleep Deprived state I thought of something I'd like to share. Now we all know the Earth is round, so I was wondering, if I had a huge cement slab about 18 Yards long and 5 Yards High, and on that slab I laid down a couple hundred yards of pipe, kept straight by ropes keeping tension on them, would I notice the curvature of the Earth while walking on the pipe? Also how long would the thing have to be so that if laid horizontally would be preceved by someone in another part of the world as perfectly vertical?

Do I smell State Funding for this project smile

No, you would not notice the curvature from the pipe. Actually, that depends on your reference point. It's like if you're walking in a train, and the train is going 60 miles an hour and you're walking three. How fast are you going? Relative to the train, 3 mph. Relative to the ground, 63. In regards to the pipe, if you're walking on it, you won't notice it. Do you notice the curvature of the earth when you walk? Maybe if you look out across the ocean, but you can't feel it underneath you at all. If you're from a great distance, say orbiting the earth or farther, and you could observe the pipe, then you'd notice it. Just like we can see that the moon is curved. So it all depends on your reference point, but if you're walking on it then you won't feel any curve.

I don't know about that pergesu, I think it would depend on the length of the poles, maybe not a few hundred yards, but like a [censored] load longer, then you would I think. Like if you had a few thousand kilometers (obviously not possible) you would notice the curve of the earth.

I don't think it would work. Pilots flying at 39,000 feet barely notice any curvature...only those flying high-altitude aircraft above 70,000 feet can generally see this phenomena.

And CyberNerd, if you don't have anything intelligent to add to this conversation, please be a good boy and not post. Thanks.

One time a woman had me tied down to a slab of rock, about the same size as your slab, and we both noticed a slight curvature in my [censored]........

If you enlarged the nucleus of an atom to the size of a basketball in S.F., the electron's orbit would pass through Phili, PA. What's in between? Other dimensions. Freaky!

No Mornse, walk down a road for thousands of kilometers. You'll never notice the Earth curving.
