I have a plan that would help end the US dependancy on Foreign Oil as well as lessen the actual amount of Crude Oil extracted every year. It's a bold and couragous idea, and I would like to propose it to DV first.

There is a waste product that the human race produces every day. Thousands of pounds of this waste product is created and is always either buried or incinerated. We have too much of this product barried on US soil and it has been known to cause a variety of problems if it should ever be introduced into the water supply. My plan is to take this waste product and convert it into a clean burning fuel. Not only will this ensure a stable energy supply for future generations, but also free up land from those gloomy landfills. I call my product Soylent Gasoline.

While Soylent Gasoline may seem Macbre, I put this question to you... Whatelse are we going to do with the ultimate waste product, let it rot?

Yes for those of you that don't know Soylent Gasoline is named after Soylent Green.

.
...
......
Yes I know Soylent Green was made from dead people, your point?

Here I expected Feces or Urine; then I read Soylent... Truely interesting...

Truely intresting. The american people will never back it. However the idea has merit. Question is how can you convert flesh into a burning fule source flamable enough to power a car?

I'm sure one could devise a chemical process to convert body fats and other tissue into a highly fatty oil or paste, similar to soap making. Then figure out how to make that fatty compound into a petrolium like substance. I mean gas is just dead prehistoric plants and animials (more or less) and seeing how we can make synthetic diamonds I see no reason why we can't do the same with corpses.

This process could also use animal scraps as filler material. Overall it could be a somewhat reasonable fuel source.

Figure this, instead of needing money to cover funeral expenses, the Soylent Gas companies would just buy your corpse, offer a ceremony for the living then get shipped off to processing. The payment would cover any death fees since burial costs would be a moot point. This also allows life insurance and social security to be put to better use settling the affairs of the deceased. So in away it does lessen the burden.

Also keep in mind that at this point anyone offering a gas alternative that works just as good and only costs $1.09 at the pump, your average Joe won't care where it comes from. Obviously there would be standards would have to be enforced and corpses from questionable sources would be investigated.

Why not just officially conquer Iraq and drill the oil ourselves? Then it wouldn't be foreign oil.

The problem with this idea, aside from the moral issues, is it typically takes enegry to convert a substance from one form to another, be it chemical, or electical. So the question would be, is more enegry gained from the process or lost though the conversions?

Perg... what does this have to do with making dead people into fuel?
Skull... yeah I admit is seems like it may take more energy at first, but with anything I figure we could perfect the process and make it more viable. I'm sure with Chemicals we can break down the body into what we need and work it from there. It may be more economical to start as a fuel additive using road kill and work the process up from there.

I use to work at a lab that was working on converting biomass into usable energy. Really the problem that lies in it is the fact that burning it is worse for the enviorment in the first place. Where I am from the power plants use about a 5% switchgrass mixture that burns with the coal. Also another related research to this would be ethanol, use plants in combination with fossil fuel to produce energy. If you look back to the 1960's and 1970's a lot of research was done involving wastemass and biomass basically they used chemical reactions and bacteria to produce methane. The process is very expensive and does not have that high of a yeild. Despite how easy they make it seem in Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome... In my opinion the best way we have to conserve fuel is to use less fossil fuels by using region specific energy sources i.e hydroelctric and wind power in conjunction with atomic energy so as to use less coal, oil, or natural gas.

I do not see this as working from a buissness stand point.

1.) Buying the corps. How much money will you spend for my Uncle Jack? Now how much fuel can you squeeze out of him? Even with filler... I doubt it would be enough to cover costs.

2.) Storage and transportation. People will not get behind a company carting dead humans in a cattle truck down the highway. How will you remove the bodys in a cost efective way and still provide the air of caring to the morning family?

3.) How will you deal with the polution issues? Make a cleaner fule? Wouldn't that mean more waste and less useable fule?

Problem Pergeseu isn't where it comes from. More the issue is how much is left. At current rates, 30 to 40 years in the Middle East. That is it. No more oil (from there) after that. Texas has a little but not enough for the country.

This plan will never work, and I will tell you why. There are too many people like me in this world who would not sell you their dead realtives to use to make your life easier, and save you money. I have no idea if it's even physically possible, but the moral aspect of it is just too much.

Clearly, there is something that needs to be done about our dependece on foreign oil but this is not the answer in my opinion.

I think we just need to phase it out over a period of several years. For now, offer tax breaks to people who buy hybrid vehicles. Make it so that the only vehicles that are now being manufactured are hybrids, so if someone goes to buy a *new* car that is the only choice they will have. In the meantime, we work on developing a cost effective way to produce hydrogen, and develop a hydrogen powered vehicle.

And when that causes problems? Defcon has a very good point.

When I am gone what made me me ceases to exist. All that remains is my shell. You can do with it as you please. The amount of money we spend on our dead. The amout of polution this causes. Imagine freeing up all those graveyards. Imagine not loading a body up with Chemicals just to bury it. Imagine not chopping down 20 trees just to bury my [censored], build my coffin.

Grind them up, treat them and burn them. The moral issue is super fiscial. Modern day funerals are a new thing in the history of our kind. In Japan they take turns burying thier dead and re-digging them up so the next guy can burry his dead. Sound like a good use of Land?

Oil will eventualy, probably in our life time be all used up. No more fosil fuled cars, planes, buses, space ships, rockets, generators, chainsaws, lawnmowers. Think about our current way of life. The way of our dead.

Well Sintax here are my responses to your business issues.

1. Prolly there would be a sliding scale depending on a number of factors but even a $100 to $500 dollar compensation is less then having people shell out $2000 to $5000 for a funeral. Some people may even choose to have their body donated for the fuel supply, it wouldn't be manditory but just buying a memorial plaque or stone to be placed in a family tomb or what would be called Public Memorial Areas (alternative to cemetaries, they'd be parks with various plaques and walls).

2. Corpse Transportation... hmmm Possibly refrigerated vans, though families could opt to use the company herses for special funerals (family elder or person of high regard). The vans would be well cared for and look professional yet discrete. Families could also arrange for their own transportation of the corpse if they choose. There would be no mid points either way, all corpses go to the nearest plant immediately.

3. Pollution is an issue, I'll give you that. Since no one has really done any hard research on the issue, I will say that overtime we would find away to make the process as clean and efficient as possible. I'm pretty sure Gasoline today burns a lot cleaner and more efficiently then Gas from twenty or thirty years ago. We just would have to figure out the best formula and processing to get the fuel as good as it can get.

I was kidding about just conquering Iraq. And it doesn't have anything to do with using corpses as full - it was just a way to solve the problem of being dependant on foreign oil smile

Bish, just because YOU aren't willing to sell off relatives doesn't mean it's not possible. Thousands of people die every day in America, and if even 1% of those are able to go towards fuel, we'd be set. Think of all the bodies that are donated to science - medical students have all the cadavers they could ever hope for.

I do agree that it'd cause huge moral issues. What if we started using dead bodies from other countries? Now we're harvesting foreign corpses as an energy source. Seems kind of creepy to me, and if you think there's a lot of debate about abortion...

Ahh.... it do not mean to judge or limit your discussion but this might be the most ridiculous idea I have heard in a long long time. Using human bodies for fuel!!! 27% of the american population are registered organ donors for christ sakes how many people do you all think would register to allow their body to be used for fuel if only 27% say its alright to use organs to save anothers life....there would be no supply and thats not even considering the fact that the idea is contray to western belief structures. I think the better avenue to look at with this kind of research would be to burn lets say pig or cattle waste after slaughtering. slaughter houses sent thousand and thousand of pounds of organic waste to rendering plants and the such so it can be made into dog food why not produce less dog and cat food to increase the fuel supply.

I was thinking about that, but those plants already make tons of other things. Well actually they do not, they seel off the parts to companys who make other things. For example... Soap, shampoo, lotions,

But it isn't just farm animals that go there. Many bumper bait creatures end up there as well. As do many peoples pets. I know for a fact Leaver 2000 uses the fat from these plants to manufacture thier soaps. I also know often they almost do not kae quota.

To depend on rendering plants you would be competing for product. Plus I like the idea of freeing up land, lowering the number of deadly chemicals we put in the ground, and many other things I dissagree with about our funeral system.

I'd do it. When I am dead, [censored] spending money on me. I am gone, WTF do I care what you do with my body. hang hats on my [censored] for all I care. Grind me up and make fule of me... Sure why not. If it means my family gets money instead of spends money...

Think of this. Why have a head stone. So people can visit your grave right... lol So you kids visit you once a year. Maybe thier kids come with them, That is it. No more visits. You are forgoten accept for a mention in the family tree, some photos, MAYBE video. What is the point in all the money to be spent?

Most people who aren't organ donors are either weirded out by the whole experiance or members of those wacko Christian groups that anyone can see is bullshit. Do you know how many hobos, drifters, and John Doe's die each year? What about illegal immigrants? A Mexican Body will burn just as well as an Americans. Even if we just used the corpses of such people we'd still see some results.

We should really consider using dead human and animal material for a productive fuel source. People will come around eventually when they realize it's one of the few alternatives we have left.
