A good while back I asked a question concerning this. For some reason, when I tried to connect to my Win2k computer from my roommates Win98 laptop, it would prompt me for a password. The username was some strange thing that could not be changed. I tried all the user passwords on this computer but could not connect.

This is NOT the problem when connecting to a Win2k share from another Win2k. Instead, you'd be prompted for both a username AND password. In that event, you can specify any valid username and password to login.

Nobody had an answer for me, and people like Gizmo even mentioned that they had the same problem. Well, finally I have the anwer.

Take the username and password that you use to login to the network with Win98. Setup that same account on the Win2k you're trying to connect to. Then you should be able to view the shares without even a password prompt! Just make sure that the user the Win98 is logged in with exists on the Win2k you're connecting to.

Yeah I got the same problem this weekend when we had LAN games in my flat, but thats only from win98 to win2k. Vice versa it will work.

The problem is that win98 ask u for a password but not a username, see with win98 and 95 shares you only need to set a pwd to access the shares, since win2k generally is multiuser setup you need a uname and a pwd, a way to get around that I think would be to set individual network permissions.

Go to drive you want shared, right click "Sharing" then on permissions, and select the network and then grant access to all users individually. It should work. I think you can also set a pwd for every individual machine so it should work.

I hope this helps.

The use of "hacker" to mean "security breaker" is a confusion on the part of the mass media. We hackers refuse to recognize that meaning, and continue using the word to mean, "Someone who loves to program and enjoys being clever about it."

I wasn't asking a question, I was answering one. And you were talking about sharing a drive - I'm talking about even getting to the folder where you SEE what shares are available. You double click on the computer icon to display the shares right? Well, the moment you double click it prompts for a password. I already said how to go from Win98 to 2k anyway.

I have a question concerning shares. I have a WinNT 4 box and WinXP box on the same network and I have file sharing enabled on both so that I can share files between them. But when I delete the guest account on either box, sharing doesn't work anymore. Why does there have to be a guest account?

What may be happening is that when you connect to a share, you are connecting as "Guest". When you deleted the guest account, you can no longer connect as it - obviously. So you just have to connect as another user.

I had given you the answer when you first asked the question, but no one paid attention to my post. Maybe i wasnt clear enough or maybe I was just ignored. Oh well, I dont post often but I usually know what Im talking about when I do.
