Major movie studios in the United States are suing several companies (Internet Enterprises Inc., RDestiny LLC, HowtocopyDVDs.com, DVDBackupbuddy.com and DVDSqueeze.com)which create software that allows users to duplicate copies of DVDs they possess.

These movie studios argue that the software allows users to duplicate material and put it on the internet where others can download it for free, regardless of copyrights. One issue is if the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) prohibits this.

The movie studios say they can lose billions of dollars in the future if the courts allow these software-makers to continue to distribute their wares. One company, 321, says that people can copy DVDs of personal material. "Fair use" will be debated.
