Music Copy Protection Spreads

Midbar Tech, the Israeli company which has added copy protection to many music CDs in the U.S., has announced that a Japanese record label called Avex will start using their Cactus Data Shield technology as well.

Avex will release three albums with copy-protection, although only certain songs will be shielded. This is the first time that Japan has experimented with this technology.

It is unlikely to be a smooth change, however. Every U.S. album that has been released with copy protection has sparked problems ranging from the CDs not playing properly, to the music being freely copied anyway.
