The Recording Industry won a major court victory today when U.S. District Court Judge John Bates ordered that Verizon identify a person who downloaded more than 600 MP3s in one day. The lawsuit began last summer and the Judge's ruling came out today.

Cary Sherman, of the RIAA, praised the ruling because he believes that it follows the law and says they will contact the file swapper and let him or her know that these actions are illegal. Verizon has yet to comment on this court ruling.

Verizon states that there are no laws requiring the company to block people from using file swapping software like Kazaa. This court ruling is a precedent which could lead the recording industry to getting names from ISPs, businesses and schools.
