Earlier this month, US military officials and politicians stated that combat deaths dropped since Saddam Hussein was captured. It appears that statistics dispute this. 33 US soldiers and one civillian have been killed in January so far.
There were 24 combat deaths in December of 2003. US Central Command says it bases its figures on two-month figures and computer malfunctions affected its ability to calculate deaths for separate months.
The bloodiest months so far have been November, which saw 94 deaths and October, which saw 35 deaths. More than half of January's deaths happened in the Anbar Province in Central Iraq. January's count does not yet include 2 helicopter crashes.
