Sick and tired of a revolving door justice system that lets hackers skate with just a few measly years in prison? Or do you think that the courts are already too hard on online miscreants who sometimes go up the creek for longer than many killers?

Either way, the U.S. government wants to hear from you.

after reading that.. i have one question:

how the hell do you literally kill someone over the internet? seriously, the government apparently thinks it can be done. so i want to know how dammit! it will save so much time and effort when i am finally pushed over the edge and decide to start killing people.

Ok this probably is not a very good example but I think it could be done. A hacker hacks the computers of a hospital and changes the files. People could get injured or killed if, for example, they got a large doze of something they very alergic at. Or something like that.

Ya know, I bet that if someone had a horrible computer with no cooling, you could get into it an overwork it so hard that the processor catches fire. wink

But I'm pretty sure that theres no way someone could directly muder someone over the internet. Indirectly, sure.

Or maybe get into a lab computer that controls robots and send the robots on a mad killing spree. I wonder if you would only be charged with being an accomplice if you did that? hmmm... ideas....

The government really isn't worried if you hack the school library, or even some companys server/network. What they are worried about is you the small time hacker wanting a harder target, a bigger challenge if you will. The people who make these very tough computer laws are most worried you will end up being a military spy, or worse.

Imagine we invade Iraq. all battle plans are sent back and forth through the military network of complex communications. some 15 year old snot nose kid hacks it and posts in a public bulletins board how to do it. Many soldiers could/would lose their lives.

Or imagine someone hacks the White house's secure network. They get Intel on where the President will be for the next month.... Not good.

To stop this sort of threat they just come down as hard on you for hacking a small network as they would for a major government network. It's called making an example out of people. The thing is in this circle it just makes the challenge more of a rush.

I am sure there are laws that take into account the loss of money from corporate networks also. These could be attacks on the financial infrastructure of our country

I think it is all image. Government is supposed to be an image of security, especially after 9-11. Probably sick of the multiple hacked government servers and defaced websites such as NASA, NSA, WhiteHouse, DOD, DOE, etc. So they are passing this law, so if you do make them look bad, they can crucify you as an example to any other kiddies.

The fact it, if you were doing anything of real damage, the laws are already in place to more than take care of you for a while smile .

This call for input is simply a way to attract attention and save face.

yup, I 100% agree with Sintax = )

Thats what they did with Mitnick, making a example from him.
Its scary how a hacker can go to jail longer then a rapist or a Murderer
