CNET Networks, an online technology company, yesterday launched a free music download service. The service allows users to search and download songs from independent and unsigned artists and is based on the company's download.com service.

CNET Networks acquired MP3.com last year, but this new service will be separate from that. CNET have also said that MP3.com will be relaunched as an information web site soon. Users and artists alike complained loudly when MP3.com was shut down.

Over the next year, CNET plans to extend its music download service until it becomes the largest download platform on the Internet.
