Anyone using their PC for several multimedia functions have been tapping their feet at some time or another waiting for Windows to boot up. Now a chip running a special drivers-mostly Linux-version can boot up PCs in just 10 seconds.
InterVideo, makers of WinDVD, have developed this InstantOn LinDVD chip in collaboration with Sharp, Intel, IBM and Sony. It will only allow for watching DVDs, listening to MP3s etc, but the regular OS will be bootable from the remote control.
A Microsoft spokesperson says that "boot time is not an issue," and suggest users never turn off XP. USA could switch off seven power stations if TVs, videos and computers were not left on standby, so the MS attitude will not please green consumers.
