New laboratory tests carried out by Japanese and American scientists show that it could one day be possible to genetically modify human sperm cells and put a stop to some genetic diseases.
The team inserted a foreign DNA into the sperm cells of a zebrafish, and were then able to mature them into working sperm cells. Previous attempts such as this one have resulted in the baby fish having a mixed DNA.
Scientists around the world, however, are of the belief that messing with the human "germline" is fraught with failure, as it is highly possible to introduce all new genetic diseases and problems that then persist down the bloodline.
