Apple Computer's iTunes store has managed to sell over 50 million songs. On April 28th, iTunes will reach its one year anniversary but could be short of the 100 million songs it wanted to sell by that date.

This, however, isn't discouraging company officials. Apple's vice president of applications marketing Rob Schoeben says: "Setting that goal was a way to put the stake in the ground and say that we were going to be the leader."

Apple has a strong lead over the other pay per download services such as Napster which reached the five million song mark last February and MusicMatch which isn't too far behind Napster. Apple shares are now selling at $26.41, a $1.15 drop.
