Apple Computers says it will bring back its speech software for new versions of the OS X operating system to make its computers more user friendly for people who are visually impaired or have learning disabilities.

Spoken Interface will feature a variety of voices which can be set to different functions, so that different voices can be selected to distinguish among tasks such as reading Web pages and reading error alerts.

Britain's Royal National Institute for the Blind welcomed the news. Because Macs are favored in some industries, such as those in which they are used for sound recording, the inclusion of speech software is seen as evening the job playing field.
