Ok,
I have a question regarding security. I realise that with a cable modem (like I have) I have a permenant IP and that my computer also has its own IP behind the router. But my question is this, what setps do I need to take to make sure that my computer is more secure? Can anyonone send me links?
I have another question. I think I read somewhere that a good way to be secure is to get into someones machine and then sort of use it as a stepping stone to get to another, so that if you are traced, they trace it back to the other comouter and not you. Does this really work? And if so, what do I need to do? Like, telnet into that machine and then what, from there to another machine? (this is assuming that I can get access to that machine)

Thanks for taking the time to read this
Thanks

First off, if you're behind a router no one can connect to your computer so long as you don't have port forwarding enabled. Another way to make connections is through a tunnel which would be through a program on your computer.

If you're paranoid, go get a software firewall. I reccommend ZoneAlarm Pro.

Proxys and Wingates will hide your IP. Cisco routers will also give you the ability. People use them to hop around and do stuff.

The machine has to have something exploitable then you need to install a service on it to allow your connections. There are tons of open and misconfigured Proxys, Win Gates, Cisco's out there if you have the knowledge to scan and use them.

Backdoors, proxy daemons, etc. Proxys are run from a program on ones computer, their not just magically there.

So say, for example that I wanted to get onto a comuputer that has AOL. Firstly, does that mean that I have to go through AOL, or just straight to the computer? Second, if I find an open port, and I get in it (as guest etc.) then how do I get root? And then what? Ahhh! so many questions!

Now you're getting the idea.

Quote:
Ahhh! so many questions!
what you need to do is stop asking them (at least outloud) and get on finding out the answers. Yes yes, now you are going to tell me you are a newb and don't know and please help you. Well I'll tell you what. I'm going to let you in on a hacking/cracking/phreaking secret known only to the very very elite...

There is a website where you tell it what you want to konw and it shows you the answer. You can do this with just about everything, on any subject, but it does worek very well for anythiung you need to know about hacking. Every "hacker" that I know uses this tool, as well as the programmers and other assorted computer enthusiasts. Ready?

www.google.com

There it is. In all its glory. The secret to to becoming a hacker. Bow to the might of GOOGLE!!!

Ok, now that that's out of the way I'll be serious for a bit.

Your router in this case acts as whats called a gateway, which technically is a type of proxy. See everything that comes to your computer goes through it. You already realize your router has a different IP than your puter, and when you are browsing the web it's your router that is getting the pages and passing em to your puter. Webservers on the net thinnk it is your router asking for the pages and not you. Webservers see the ip of your router and not the IP of your puter. This is exactly how proxying over the internet works, just on a larger scale. However, routers are made to do this, while puters need software to be able to be a proxy. At this point we need to go back to our uber-tool I was just talking about. With a simple entry into the textbox we now have more friggin info on proxies than we could ever possible want:

http://www.google.ca/search?q=proxy...p;hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

OK, this is getting close to answering your second question, but for now just understand that hiding behind a router is a good security measure in itself. While it does nothing to hide who you are, it deos protect your computer from all the nasty [censored] that is on the net. Kinda like some badass body armour. If you are still worried than do like giz suggested and get Zone Alarm Pro. It's a software firewall that will help you keep track of everything that is coming and going on your puter.

First thing, any unauthorized entry into a foreign computer system is 100% totally ILLEAGLE. So while yes a proxy will hide your ip from the net, if you broke into that box then there is still logs and record that you can be found with. Having said that, if you check back to the last link I just dropped, you will see that there are hundreds of proxy lists out on the net that people are willing to share with poeople like you. You can just grab a proxy off one of those lists and start using it. The other way is to scan for them yourself. Most proxies use specific ports to do there work on, and you can find them with a port scanner or a proxy scanner. With a proxy that is already running you just need to tell the programs you are using how to find it. In Internet Explorer you would go tools-->options-->connections-->LAN settings, and fill in the proxy server area. After you set that IE is now using that server as a proxy and you are hiddem. You won't notice anything when you use it sept it may be a little slower to load webpages.

Aight, I'm sick of typing now. Go read, and read some more. Google is your friend, and I'm hungry.

Ok, thanks for the info. I have been reading everything I could find. Low and behold, even us lamerz know about Google. However, much of the security info that I find deals with dial-up etc. and not with cable. Also, would a proxy really make that much difference, since my router IP is still static?
PS -- If my questions piss you off so much, you needent reply! Ill keep using your magical wonder tool to find info!
Thanks again

You think that pissed me off? Ha! That's kinda funny. If I was pissed I wouldn't have wasted 30 minutes trying to answer your questions. That was meant to be humourous. You need to learn what sarcasm is bud, and as moderator of this forum I might as be the one to teach you = But that aside, I can understand not finding what you are looking for. Searching in itself is an art.

Well, thank you for answering. You'll have to forgive me, english is not actually my native language (even though I live in these blasted states)! What other things would you reccomend searching for?

Surely, there must be a way to prevent/circumvent this?

Delete the logs, but you'd have to have root (assuming its a linux box).

Ok, thanks. I know (from running them) that *nix Oses have root, and that mac, being based on the BSD has root as well. Also, XP has System Administrator Accounts. What kind of security do earlier versions of windows (9x) have in terms of accounts?
Also, Infinite said that breaking into an aol box is illegale. I realise this, but what if I attempted to screw around with my own network, is that legal (auditing)?
Thanks

None :x... "security" was not a part of 95/98/ME, just a part of NT/2000/XP :x... I still find it odd as hell that ME is a 95 version and 2000 is an NT version, why couldn't they just keep the [censored] letters letters...

Hey, brand new to the club, relatively new to the computer world, but I had to reply when I saw this one. You are on cable and worried about a static IP. Well my friend welcome to DHCP, (dynamic host configuratoin protocol) if I understand it correctly, your ip is not longer static but rather dynamic (as the name says) allwoing it to randomly switch each time you connect. and as per routers, everyone will have their fav but mine is the Linksys etherfast BEFSR41 because it is what i believe to be part of a select crowd. It ghosts your computer, essentially when ppl look at it, nothin is there. they dont even have the chance to see your computer because it just registers as a blank box. As stated I am a newb and if any of my info is incorrect I'd be happy if you would tell me.

Only some providers support DHCP; a rough majority use Static which most prefer.

I have a Linksys BEFSR41, I'll agree that it's quite nice...

It's semi easy to crack into if you have the boredom and the knowhow and you know the rough details...
