My parents have a local dial-up isp, and they have been looking at getting earthlink because of the commercials, it is $15 more a month than what they are already paying.
My question is how does the accelerator work and can I get a program that does the same thing for free?

all these "accelerators" do is allow your computer to recieve more compression for text; if you read the fine print it mentions nothing of downloads and sais all it will speed up is text on 90% of them.

meh, 9.95 for dialup, 19.95 for cable in a good area, some west coast spots have it as a add on for 9.99 even, here it's 29.95 if you don't have a cable modem. 19.95 if you do:/ SO WTF are ppl still on dialup? You'd think even poor ppl would learn that their being ripped the hell off.

The cheapest price for broadband of any kind out here is around 40$ per month, weeve :x It looks like EarthLink is offering a better-than-standard program to speed up your dial-up connection, since it speeds up gfx, and downloads as well as text. However, most of the time when you see dial-up companies advertising faster webpages and [censored] they are just saying that they now support the v. 44 and/or v. 92 standards. Your modem has to be compliant as well. Check it out here: http://www.v92.com/

(Yeah, I know it's off-topic but I felt like adding it.)

Oh, and to answer the other part of your question, check out http://www.download.com for some other dial-up accelerators.

Dash, it won't speed up downloads! Read their fine print. It speeds up text and "some" graphics; they don't touch downloads.

The cheapest price for broadband of any kind out here is around 40$ per month, weeve :x(well maybe your in bumphucksville?) It looks like EarthLink is offering a better-than-standard program to speed up your dial-up connection,(doesn't speed it up, and it's not a better deal) since it speeds up gfx, and downloads as well as text.(just text) However, most of the time when you see dial-up companies advertising faster webpages and [censored] they are just saying that they now support the v. 44 and/or v. 92 standards.(56k no matter what version is as far as flex modems can go by fcc regulations...just like cable modems are regulated, our hardware can do better, as it is, and we could be having much better service...don't you know your government does this? This is just regulations lol) Your modem has to be compliant as well. Check it out here: http://www.v92.com/

(Yeah, I know it's off-topic but I felt like adding it.)

Oh, and to answer the other part of your question, check out http://www.download.com for some other dial-up accelerators. (heh good that you answered the guys question, even though it just works on text, and it's on compression. lol, btw...windows dialup/networking can enable compression of it's own, it's only if it's supported. You can do all kinds of things, like set a auto reconnect, and have a min set bps speed. You can get two phone lines, and double dial in. Then have two modems on one machine, and bridge the connections in xp...kthx close to isdn...cheaper..I believe, and [censored]...stop saying cable is 40 or 60 or 80 or 100 I know in areas it's expensive, and from different providers, and if your not on their service(giz you have cable?I thought you only had sattillite? a frac t1-t3 in arizona is the same as a dsl/cable connection, here dsl is cheaper but verizon i the 2 years they've offered it have yet to change that *not available yet in your area* sign, it's something to do with my zipcode, like their stupid, and can't install a greater distance of fiber for my city. We all know a number of factors matter in these cases, so um..I don't care really if in a city, or town it's not the way I projected it, because I'm talking about a bigger picture, and from what I've seen, in my travels accross the us/over seas. [censored] is a changing, and the prices have rapidly lowered, so I have no idea wtf..cable internet access would be $60..unless that's for cable internet, and cable tv included giz, then their screwing you, and you know it.:/ 40 is ok, if their over charging for service, and the cable modem. That's change as businesses fight for ppl.

All I have left to say is that things are much more complex then simple ppl speak of them as. You see a apple stand, and say it sells apples for a dollar each...good for you, you say one in another city sells them for 50 cents..good, but your missing alot of details, and [censored] you don't want to spend time saying because it's conflicting, so why say your small piece if it's not going to include a bigger picture. You see it, you know it, you just gotta speak it more often, let it be known that this is how things are going. I really am wondering why comcast would be charging $60 a month for [censored] cable internet, but before I go into looking into things giz, liek...hook up a explain, so I don't say anything you can say first.

ok, weeve, not sure why you felt like adding that...I was saying that Earthlink offered a better than standard program because it "appeared" to speed up downloads, which most don't even claim. And thank you for clarifying my point on v. 92/44, that is exactly what I was saying. If you really care, I live in the second largest city in my state :x Kinda like being the fastest turtle in a turtle race but still...

In order to clarify why I thought it speeds up downloads:

"Does everything on my computer move faster? What kind of Web content does EarthLink Accelerator speed up?"

"MP3 files, executables, and other files (when downloaded using your Web browser)"

And the fine print has nothing do with that statement at all...

"*With EarthLink Accelerator certain web page text and graphics will load faster when compared to standard dial-up Internet service. Actual results may vary. EarthLink Accelerator is only compatible with EarthLink's dial-up service and specified Windows(tm) browsers."

That's the only fine print I see, perhaps there is more?

The fine print clearly states: "Certain web page text and graphics will load faster when compared to standard dial-up internet service".
