Dell has announced that it will be recalling some 35,000 laptop batteries as they could "overheat and potentially cause a short-circuit". The notebooks include Latitudes, Inspiron and Precisions made between October 2004 and October 2005.

A Dell spokesman, Tom Kehoe, said: "Working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, we have issued a voluntary recall for the defective notebook batteries." The batteries in question could pose a fire risk.

Each battery has an identification number on a white sticker. Consumers are being asked to have this number at the ready when they contact Dell about the recall. 22,000 recalled batteries were sold in the US, with the remaining 13,000 sold overseas.
