The Recording Industry Association of America is suing a further 493 people, bringing the total to nearly 3,000 so far since last September. The association is desperately trying to discourage users from sharing music online.

The RIAA does not know the names of the 493 users they are suing; they plan to discover the details through court issued subpoenas. The RIAA has had trouble with these "John Doe" lawsuits since ISP Verizon did not have to provide customer names.

RIAA President Cary Sherman said "We will continue to go the extra mile and seek to resolve these cases in a fair and reasonable manner." Also on Monday, the RIAA sued 24 users by name after discovering their identities through John Doe suits.
