The Copyright Office of the U.S. Library of Congress is now requiring all Internet radio webcasters, satellite radio stations and TV radio stations to publish playlists so the government can establish if royalties are being paid.

Small webcasters are expected to find this new rule a burden but most large-scale webcasters have already prepared for this move. Commercial webcasters are required to pay micropayments of $0.08 cents for each song played. Non profits pay less.

It was the Digital Millennium Copyright Act which required webcasters to pay royalties. John Simson, of SoundExchange, says the new rule will make it much easier to ensure royalties are paid. He adds that it also falls short of what the RIAA wanted.
