BAILEY, Colo. -- One teenager is dead and another is being questioned after a high-speed pursuit along Highway 285 in Chaffee and Park Counties. Authorities said both teens are runaways.

The chase began at about 8 p.m. Wednesday south of Johnson's Village, in Chaffee County. A U.S. Forest Service employee spotted a Ford Focus and Ford Explorer driving recklessly on the highway and followed them.

The two drivers refused to pull over, according to investigators, and the cars took off northbound on U.S. Highway 285, heading toward Fairplay in Park County. Officers said speeds reached 100 mph on the narrow, two-lane highway.

During the chase, the Focus collided head-on with a Subaru, killing the 16-year-old driver of the Focus instantly. The driver of the Subaru received moderate injuries.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper spotted the Explorer 60 miles away about an hour later and began chasing it toward Bailey, Colo.

The Explorer was forced off the highway in Bailey and the driver escaped. A 15-year-old boy was captured Monday morning on a hillside on the south side of Bailey. Authorities from several jurisdictions were questioning him.

Both teens are from Nebraska, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The Explorer was reported stolen from Buena Vista, Colo., and the Focus was reported stolen out of Omaha, Neb.
