According to scientists in Britain, 2005 was the warmest year on record for the Northern Hemisphere, and the second warmest year across the globe since records began in the 1860s.

Temperatures recorded in the Northern Hemisphere Atlantic Ocean are also the warmest recorded, which scientists from the University of East Anglia and the UK Met Office are using as evidence of human-induced global warming.

Overall, the global temperature increased by 0.48C in 2005. One global warming opponent said: "If indeed 2005 is the warmest northern hemisphere year since 1860, all this proves is that 2005 is the warmest northern hemisphere year since 1860."
