According to a report in Aviation Week & Space Technology, Iran is planning to launch a satellite on the back of a ballistic missile that the government had converted into a launch vehicle. The missile was a Shahab 3.

The conversion could mean Iran may soon be in posession of an intercontinental ballistic missile that has the ability to strike Russia and central Europe, and may be able to reach as far as China and India.

An ex-head of the Israel Missile Defense Organization said that "A reconnaissance satellite of reasonable performance should weigh about 300 kilograms. Once Iran learns how to put 300 kilograms into earth orbit, it could adapt... into an ICBM..."
