I was thinking, since UGN is going to change it's design, maybe it should be time to start some work on the Kbase and try to sort out the old files and keep what is still good, and moust of all to start working on new files.

The way I see it, in every category of the forum, the Moderators could propose, every month, some topics for the rest to look into and eventually write an article. It will increase the Kbase, UGN will have an original Kbase, people will eventually learn more, and the ones that come here for information will have something to read, not just the posts from the forum.

The Kbase was one of the things that made me come here at UGN, because it was a great place to search for articles and read things, and probably others came here for the same reason. It's sad to see that things are going so slow around this subject.

I know that this ain't easy for Gizmo and the rest of you, who work to update UGN and keep everything running smooth, but I think that the Kbase it's a very important aspect of UGN and all of us should try and do something about it.

We're actually going to have "KBASE" moderators, people who will be able to add and organise the kbase. We will have an "Archive" section for the older texts wink ...

As for the moderators part, their actually supposed to do that lol...

Its not a "new design" its a revamp and adding features, tieing the site to be php/mysql based, with the cgi/perl bbs.

Most people don't want to help, they want to come here and mooch, they thing things are easy for us and come free, they never take into account the costs of running the site, licenses, bandwidth, time, etc.

With the UGN 2.0 completion (at least the kbase and fbase modules which are in development stages now) we'll be able to submit items easier, have them organised for users, have "voting" so users can show what articles/files theive found interesting, etc.

Not to find some that actually give half a [censored] lol...

I've been working on ebooks recently, for my articles at least, since pdf's are available on any platform, theid retain their formatting, and be viewable on any monitor.

Well, I'm out, still workin (7am here, i never sleep, i've been coding/modding since noon yesturday)...

Well, I would like to help. I'll start working on a module for the KBASE and FBASE (in a couple of weeks, for now I still have 3 exams more). If you like it you can integrate it in the new design.

I will also have around 5 articles but they are not ready yet (still have to check the spelling and arrange them a bit), and are in .txt format.
I prepare a couple more on security and networking.

You should try to post a list with things that have to be done on the page, or what you would like the members to do/write about/search/etc. This way we would all knew and could help better.

/me is I'm going to study.
Later.

lol, the module is almost done, we don't need design assistance.

Articles are good, I can always make them into ebooks, I actually made 4 articles from the linux basic commands topic.

lol, the whole thing is, no one gives me input on what they'd like researched, which is the whole issue... I have no problem with spending a few days researching a topic, but no one gives me topics to research. Sort of demolishes the point...

How about an intro to C or perl.

How about info on how credit machines in gas pumps make thier connection and how they process data. Do they use IP or thier own stuff.

Or an intro into Python, delphi, ruby, or some of the other not so popular scripting languages.

heh there is some ideas.

<snicker> the ATM's ARE on a private network, however the private network dials to the web to transfer data to the servers.

I'll peek into the others though...

Any other requests?

You sure? They all actualy dial in and do not have maybe a DS0 (64 kbs) Or chanelized T-1 connection. I know some ATM's have a direct connect to a host circuit. They never have to dial because they are constantly connected to a DS-3 or OC-3 which runs between a few main offices. Though some do Dial in because I have heard it.

I am mostly curious about Gas pumps. I would imagine they are the same, but maybe not.

I thought that ATMs would be on a private network, but apparently they're not. When the slammer worm was at it's peak, I tried to get money from an ATM. I couldn't, and found out later it was because of the worm.

see the network is private BUT it connects to the internet at one point... Basically think of your home network, you have 20 computers using one ip connectin to the internet, its supposidly secure, now if you down half the net you won't be able to connect to certain things, such as in our case scorched earth, in the atm's case their uplink lol...
