There is no "best" C++ compiler, but if you can get it, I would definately recomend Visual C++ if you have windows.

BTW, anyone know where to get it for free? (besides file-sharing programs)

Go somewhere that teaches programming and uses visual studio. Most use the academic version which say professional on them still. However there are some distribustions that specifically say student version on the CD as well. When you are there have them believe you are in the class and screw up the compiler somehow beyond their knowledge and get him to reinstlal it, easier if all the computers are taken. If he brings the cd's and starts teaching the class while you fix your "[censored] ups" then you're set. Get some software and make an image of them and if you have access to a fast FTP or some other online sotrage witha descent speed send them there and hope noone is watching you. The next day when the prof wonders where you are thwy will realize you weren't in the class at all and you just robbed them of their software. If you want less work find someone who has it and burn it. I don't know if .NET is burnable but 6 is. of course that's all assuming you can get your own CD-key, they aren't going to let you see that thing. 6.0 academic version say enterprise edition.

Being a Linux user I've always been satisfied using GCC for all my compiling needs. It works on a variety of platforms other than Linux which makes it ideal if you strictly want a compiler without the development environment.
