You guys make the passwords, i dont understand y we cant create our own, i can never remember the password you guys give... but i always have it stored in my email. But every other message board ive used you can make your own password. thats all smile . Is there a reason for you guys making members passwords?

Posted By: dashocker Re: Passwords - 06/18/02 12:13 AM
you can change ur password. view your profile and then click the button that says change password.
Posted By: BackSlash Re: Passwords - 06/18/02 03:05 AM
ya, dashockers right, its possible to change your password
Posted By: Gremelin Re: Passwords - 06/18/02 04:21 AM
You change your password in your profile. It is generated initially for you so that we can verify your email address and so that no one can sit and snoop the packet sicne you'd end up changing it in the first place.
Posted By: SilentRage Re: Passwords - 06/18/02 12:38 PM
and really, I leave the password as-is. I wouldn't change it. If somebody was to know stuff about you, or know passwords you've used on other sites or whatever, than there's a chance they can guess your password. If you use a weak password - there's a chance they could brute force your password. But if you just accept the password assigned to you, then no worries.
Posted By: Soap Re: Passwords - 06/21/02 12:49 PM
Nah SR I think that's when security gets too much. I how practical is that ? You'll never remember more than 3/4 passwords like that. What'll you do? Store it somewhere.....
Posted By: Influx Re: Passwords - 06/21/02 01:20 PM
You'll learn your password trough the years, if you al least stay that long...
Posted By: SilentRage Re: Passwords - 06/22/02 02:12 AM
Soap, shut up. It's because people didn't leave their passwords as-is that I was able to gain access to admin on this site back when beard had it - and some people's moderator accounts right now, heh, I'll let you chew on that one for a little while. And, I could've chose to brute force the accounts but I didn't cause other people DID leave their passwords as-is. It would be a waste of my time.

Good freakin dillmuch, people must think I don't know what the heck I'm talking about.
Posted By: Moffesto Re: Passwords - 06/24/02 03:44 AM
I use the same pw for basically everythign, but its not a easy to guess pw... i doubt any brute force could crack it tho.
Posted By: Moffesto Re: Passwords - 06/24/02 07:53 AM
im sorry i didnt notice you could change your password, thanks for clear that up for me. wink
Posted By: SilentRage Re: Passwords - 06/24/02 12:48 PM
heh, moffesto, it is a bad idea to use the same password for everything. Cause if anybody finds your password to just any ONE of those things (like if Gizmo takes a peek at your password right now) then they'd have access to EVERYTHING of yours. That includes email accounts and game accounts and other webboard accounts and your personal computer's password-protected stuff and anything else you may have password-protected.

Or just leave the password as-is and live a secure life.
Posted By: Moffesto Re: Passwords - 06/24/02 04:28 PM
thats tru, i have to trust gizzy...hmmm, I dunno em well enough to do that so im just going to leave it.
Posted By: SilentRage Re: Passwords - 06/24/02 07:14 PM
Oh he's perfectly trustworthy on that. It's the other people who may gain access to the board that may look at your password. You never know.
Posted By: Soap Re: Passwords - 06/24/02 07:28 PM
Sorry If I made ppl "think you didn't know what you were talking about" SR. I mean You really DO know what you are talking about, I mean psh...

k anyway. I'm sorry if it's so l33t-0 to have
2*Av%#$):^.,Kk as a password example for all your passworded protected [censored] but honeslty....how many of those are you going to remember?
PEOPLE (not you SR :p ) WILL (after the 5th password let's say...) SAVE it down somehow somewhere.

As for twarting bruteforce, I belive it's a matter of using @ least 1 of each avaible characters sets (allowed different TYPESof characters) and making it long enought.

tal33st(WANKER) would be a sufficient passwordfor most "things" actually passworded (i didnt say EVERYTHING...)
Posted By: SilentRage Re: Passwords - 06/25/02 01:57 AM
smile

Well, I just don't delete the confirmation email I recieve that contains the password that's been assigned to me. I almost never need the password cause it's stored in a cookie anyway.

No fuss.
Posted By: Gremelin Re: Passwords - 06/25/02 02:20 AM
yeh i know everyones passwords, but i could care less about [censored] lol...
Posted By: Grifter Re: Passwords - 06/26/02 12:12 AM

Heh, do you trust me Mofesto? You are member 99 on my board....

SR is right, you don't wana use the same password for everything.
Posted By: Moffesto Re: Passwords - 06/26/02 03:22 AM
lol, i understand wink .... i dont think i changed the pw u gave me for your boards... hell i have no idea at the moment.
Posted By: KkamaKkazi Re: Passwords - 06/26/02 10:20 PM
how often do you all change ur passwords anyways?I change mine every ??? days
Posted By: Moffesto Re: Passwords - 06/27/02 12:42 AM
i change mine about once every 6-12 months. Ive been using one thats really easy for me but hard for others to crack, so its a big decision whether ima change mine here soon.
Posted By: CyberNerd Re: Passwords - 06/27/02 05:44 AM
Ive heard that if you put a punctuation mark (,.! etc.) as a charactor in your password it makes it impossible for most password crackers to get the pass, any truth to that?
Posted By: Moffesto Re: Passwords - 06/27/02 05:55 AM
I would say so, most pw crackers i know of do dictionaries and combinations of numbers and letters, etc.
Posted By: Gremelin Re: Passwords - 06/27/02 10:00 AM
hehe its more fun to use ASCII since theres any number of charecters wink . uNF.
Posted By: Paragon Re: Passwords - 07/03/02 12:44 PM
Yeh, ASCII is phun! ?! wink

Not so. I have a number of passwords, and they're mostly combinations of letters and numbers that are meaningless to others, and I remember them without writing them down.

Heh, Yahoo doesn't even need a password! laugh
Posted By: dashocker Re: Passwords - 07/05/02 11:33 PM
heh, SR is so l33t. Dont question him! I really only have 3 passwords (2 for UGN, and 1 for email) that i even use. The 2 for UGN are the same. Its actually quite easy to remember ur pass if u use a combination of letters and numbers and special characters as a mnemonic. For instance,
letters for words, connected with a char to a number, etc. Like the first letter of each word in a sentence plus '%' then like ur birthday year or something. EASY
