Broadband in Your Electric Outlet by Matsushita - 10/01/05 12:18 AM
Dump the Ethernet cables and wireless configurations. Electric outlets with broadband capable chips imbedded in them are being developed by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., says the company. The technology will be at CEATAC, October in Tokyo.
Matsushita claims the ability to send data over electric wires at rates up to 170 megabits per second, faster than any existing Ethernet. They are also talking about smart refrigerators, televisions and other products.
This could let you turn your air conditioner on by a cell phone from outside your home. But for now an adapter will retrofit the outlets for hooking up Ethernet ready devices. Matstushita is in talks with the Japanese govt. to allow the devices.
