Hackers Bypass iTunes Copy Protection From Song Downloads - 03/21/05 10:18 PM

PyMusique allows people to take away the digital rights management (DRM) technology used for copy protection. With this utility, people still have to pay for their download but can bypass Apple's FairPlay DRM software which limits copying.

Jon Johansen, the creator of DeCSS software which allowed people to rip DVDs, worked on PyMusique with a group of other programmers that included 17 year old Pennsylvania high schooler Cody Brocious. Brocoius says the software is completely ethical.
iTunes does not add the copy protection until after someone purchases and downloads a song. Apple has yet to respond to this matter but it may see a TOS violation. An attorney says software that bypasses antipiracy mechanisms is illegal in the US.
