Hey.

I recently had bor.teamphreak.net forward to the IP of my box. When I IRC from the box, I'd like my mask to show up as "bor.teamphreak.net" I think that it should. I've seen people with IP's forwarded to their boxes have their hostnames show up as the domain before.

Could anyone tell me the commands to get the hostname/mask to change to bor.teamphreak.net in bx?

Thanks a lot guys.

Ok, let's make sure I got ya straight on this. When you're chatting on other IRC servers you want your hostmask to say bor.teamphreak.net.

Well, to do this is server specific. As you may know, the IRC server looks up your IP via the DNS protocol or API's or whatever to find your hostmask. This means the IP lookup is made on your ISP's network and the return value is whatever your ISP wants it to be. So that is the IRC default unless a lookup failed or there is no hostmask associated with your IP - then the mask is the IP itself. To get this changed on UGN's irc server, a Global Op or Admin must change your hostmask to what you want it to be. Other server's may have different commands to do this - but generally, normal users cannot change their hostmask on IRC servers.

You can do this two different ways...

DNS would have to be [censored] with to reverse DNS for the IP/Domain.

or

You can setup VHOSTS or HOST in your IRCD.

This may be of no use. But when I used to use my clone bot on UGN, then close it and go IRC on different server, sometimes it would change my hostmask to the name of my comp. And if I came back to UGN IRC, the host mask would now be the name of my comp there too. Just wondering if you guys could help explain that one too smile Im gonna go test it right now, just to refresh the memory and see if it still works. I think this had to do witht the other server, but IDK. HEH, 50 posts, j33t! L8r

as far as I know, the old version of IRCPlus is the only server that actually used a netbios lookup to grab your computer name to use as your host. That is very strange and I don't know why it would do that. My GUESS is that if a DNS lookup failed, it would grab your computer name to use instead, and if that failed, it would use your IP.
