Various Questions I've been Pondering - 04/09/02 02:04 PM

Got a set of questions I've been pondering:

1. What is ICMP?
2. Are TCP, UDP, and ICMP packets the only types of packets used (At the most basic level, that is.)? If not, what are the most commonly used packets?
3. What is a FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) - I know that much, but nothing else. What is this?
4. What is a "symlink"?
5. How does one generate netmasks?
6. Why would one use a proxy to connect to the Internet?
7. What would be sent through this proxy?

Anyone got the answers? Beyond RTFM?

ICMP is: Internet Control Message Protocol. It is generally used in PING. It allows for the generation of error messages, test packets, and informational messages related to IP

Those are all widly used packets, but theres a lot of others.

FQDN i quote from the dictionary " (FQDN) The full name of a system, consisting of its local hostname and its domain name, including a top-level domain (tld). For example, "venera" is a hostname and "venera.isi.edu" is an FQDN. An FQDN should be sufficient to determine a unique Internet address for any host on the Internet. This process, called "name resolution", uses the Domain Name System (DNS)."

A SYMLINK is a symbolic link, basically its a link to something locally that is elsewhere. Such as how mail.undergroundnews.com is linked to another portion of the site.

I don't really understand what you mean in #5.

You would use a proxy to mask your identity on the internet. A proxy would show the proxy address as opposed to yours. If you live in a third world country that denies a lot of **** though, theid be packet sniffing your logs. This means that anything you do is picked up at your ISP and not through the internet.

Anything can be sent through a proxy, chat, websites, programs, photos, anything that would be on a website or chat service.

Holy Fo Shiet! An intelligent answer! Thanks man!

Anyway, by #5 i meant this:

A netmask tells your computer how big your network is. I guess the real question is this: can a netmask be (in binary)

11111111.11111111.11111111.00100000 because there's not a string of 1's then a string of 0's? I heard somewhere that netmasks cannot have 1's and 0's interspersed in each other for some reason (i forget) but I do understand the whole idea behind binary numbers.

no they cna't be in binary. Most networking programs (for conenction sharing) allow a specific ammount of users/computers. Mine for example supports an unlimited ammount of systems.

To set them up for a LAN you do it in TCP/IP configuration and you set yoru server as a gateway.

((hope that answers your question, if not get me on AIM on TommyBoy31337))

Gizmo beat me to the punch here, but I can give ya this one tidbit of information he left out.

ICMP packets is what tells your computer that your connection timed out, that the host is unreachable, as well as other various errors. The error messages are typically sent by routers.

****, I feel so cheated. Gizmo! There isn't room enough on this board for us 2! You're hogging all the questions!
