Hello there,

I have a laptop that i would like to connect to my college LAN, I have a network cable and every thing, but i cannot seem to access anything on the network, it is as if there is nothing plugged into the laptop.

I mean is there anything i have to set up to get my laptop to recognize the connection obviously apart form having the network cable plugged in?

Any help on this would be greatly preciated.

What OS is on the machine? Do you have your DNS settings setup properly?

The computes are OS's are as follows: -

Windows XP --> Laptop

Windows 2000 --> College server

How do i go about setting my DNS settings?

Right click "My Network Places" and choose "Properties"
Right click your connection (or local area connection, depends on the name).
Double click on "TCP/IP"

Now, depending on your network depends on the settings here... If your college uses DHCP, set them both to obtain automatically; else you may want to contact them for the DNS information.
