10,500 metro Atlanta residents were surveyed and it was found that there was a 3% greater chance one was obese for each extra half an hour one drove a day. People who lived near stores they could walk to were 7% less likely to be obese.

Lawrence Frank who headed the study drew the conclusion: The more driving you do means you're going to weigh more the more walking means you're going to weigh less." This is one of new studies looking at how environment affects obesity.

One surprising result of the study was that driving time appears to affect obesity more than any other factor including age, ethnicity, income or gender. The study ran from 2000 to 2002 and was funded by $4 million worth of grants.
