Laptops have long been popular because they are portable and easier to transport compared to a desktop PC. Now a whole array of handheld computer cell-phone combinations are posing serious competition.

Devices such as Sony's Clie handheld computer, Palm's Treo 600 mobile phone-computer and others from Hewlett-Packard and Dell give users functions they normally enjoy on laptop computers. Apple's iPod has many features associated with handhelds.

They allow people to send e-mail, check the internet, play MP3s and movies, schedule events and many other functions. And with the number of transistors doubling every 18 months on chips (Moore's Law), these devices are bound to get better.

Laptops accounted for the majority of computer sales this year, and this year sales are up more than the last few years were. So I don't think there is any worry. For now, the PDA cellphones and such, will continue to be for a select few. Sure ppl may buy them, but I think a laptop will still be necessary, it fulfills a need indepent of PDAs. You have a large keyboard to allow for wordprocessing, replying of emails, entering data in spreadsheets and several other common tasks done by business people and casual users on the go.

The screens/keyboards simply aren't there for PDAs and I don't see them being able to provide that. Subnotebooks fit the bill for ppl wanting something smaller than a laptop.
