The Business Software Alliance has released the results of its annual survey on global piracy with the final tally of losses due to software piracy reaching almost $29 billion.

These losses total almost 60% of legal sales of desktop software of $51 billion. The BSA cite Internet "warez" trading sites and peer-to-peer networks as the prime culprits in making it easier to exchange pirated software.

The BSA has come under fire in previous years, so their tally this year utilizes a different research firm, and method to generate their tally. The software on a typical users machine is used rather than past buying trends to determine the tally.
