Drug Kills Tumours, Halts Cancer Cell Division - 03/15/05 04:48 PM

An experimental drug has been developed at the Temple University which encourages the death of cancerous tumours and puts a stop to the division of cancerous cells in the body. The drug has been named ON01910 and was used on 94 human cancers.

ON01910 interferes with the Plk1 gene, which is known to play a major role in the spread of cancer throughout the body. Plk1 also has more of a presence in patients whose survival chances were very poor.

Research leader Prem Reddy said: Our drug stops tumor cells from reaching normal cells three ways. First, it blocks invasion, next it blocks angiogenesis [the growth of surrounding blood vessels] and finally, it induces tumor cell death."
