when i go to type something in a search engine or other text box in internet explorer, a list pops up under it with all the words i've typed in the past that match the letter i started to type. does anyone know how to turn this feature off or if it is even possible to do. thanks

heh, do you realize how long it took for me to answer that for myself? Here I was, using a computer at work that I wasn't supposed to and I use google... well that sucks cause I noticed that the computer user uses google too... I searched all around in the Internet Explorer settings and I couldn't find a damn thing to turn it off. I remember that there's a box that asks you if you want to turn autocomplete on - but that's it. You're stuck buddy.

Well, I started snooping around in the registry. Searching for words like autocomplete and such, and after a long time I discovered that the entire advanced internet settings page is determined in the registry! You can add settings and remove settings from that page in there! Cool! (Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions) So anyway, I'll get straight to the point. I found where I can turn the damn thing off in the registry.

ah damn, I can't find it again. It may be because I never turned it on for my own computer - so the value was never set to either a yes or no. Try this location:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete

In there you'll find a value called "Append Completion". The yes or no here determines if you get auto complete in the address bar - has nothing to do with the google text box. See if there's a second value in there that says "yes" and change it to no.

I'll be back at work tonight and I'll look for the value that I changed.

heh, you dont need to mess with the registry! Go to tools, internet options, content, auto-complete, and turn forms off, then clear the forms. I know on Win98 it doesent seem to turn it off though frown I have to clear the forms everytime, but it works in XP. SR's fix may help if you run Win98 or have any other problems. L8r
