I have a small network of computers (peer to peer) running various Win OSs (95, 98, 2000, XP) and have everything up and running fine except for one problem. I have one machine (Win 2000) that I want the rest of computers in NW to see (that works) but I don't want a user logon of this one Win 2000 machine to be able to see anything on the network at all. I haven't been able to figure this last part out. Thought I knew what I was doing but no luck on this one.

Can anyone help me out on how to handle this?

Ok....so you want all the computers to be able to see the win2k machine, but the win2k machine not to see the other computers?
Yes, that is correct.

I used to have a Win95 machine prior to putting this Win2K machine there and it was very simple: when the machine booted up it would ask for a NW password and if you just didn't enter it (hit esc) then no user on that machine would ever see the NW but any other machine on the NW could drop files onto that machine. That is exactly the functionality I want. But with Win2K I can't figure out how to stop someone logged on as a user (not administrator) from seeing/accessing the NW.

I have checked with a bunch of guys who normally have an answer and none could tell me. Hope you can help.

Do you want to do that for all accounts including administrator? Or just the ones that are not administrator? If you do it that way, you can just restrict their access in the user panel.

Incase you are wondering, That is not all I have to offer I am just waiting to see if you want it done for all accounts, or all but administrator.
I just want to make a simple user account that wouldn't be able to access the NW. It is fine for the administrator account to have access as only an authorized person would have that password.

Re user panel - I must be doing something wrong as I could not find any settings that would stop NW access from a user account.

Ok if you don't want them to use the network at all, setup a user account and restrict it from using the network, by going into the control panel and users. Also there is a plugin in computer management in win2k that you can add restriction snapins for specific users. I believe it is the same in pro as it is in server so it should be prettu self explainatory once you get in there if you need a step by step tell me and I'll try to find one or make one. Also you can disable services in admistrative tools and kill the network access that way for that user account you can get more info on the services at http://www.blackviper.com
Thank and got what you said.

Here is problem I run into: When I go to control panel/users I can't get any useful settings for any individual users or groups - just stuff on password expiration, etc. I have tried every option there and can't find anything significant. (And I am logged on as administrator.) ????

Re your suggest on a plug in computer management in Win2K - I haven't dealt with this before so can you just point me in the right direction on this.

I don't want to tie you up having to do step by step instructions - I am not a novice, just hit something I am not familiar with here, so hopefully you can just take me a couple steps further on this and then I can fly on my own from there. Appreciate your help.
