So whit which do u have most problems to break? Or on another way : Which's the best?
Posted By: Ares Re: Firewall - 02/28/03 09:30 PM
It depends are u looking for a good fire-wall thats free or cost money? U can get any for free if u look in the right place though
Posted By: pergesu Re: Firewall - 02/28/03 11:19 PM
ipchains is really nice. And free
Posted By: Infinite Re: Firewall - 03/01/03 12:30 AM
OpenBSD PF is nice too. The rules take a bit to get the hang of, but once you do you have a lot of control over what's going across your gateway.

If you want security from a firewall... well, you can't have it, but you can come fairly close. But you need a hardware firewall (a separate box). Running a software firewall on your own computer is not very secure at all.
But if you don't have another box you can use (even just a crappy old 486), then you oughtta try Smoothwall (www.smoothwall.org). It's an open source firewall with only one exploitable hole found in 3 years.
Posted By: pergesu Re: Firewall - 03/01/03 01:58 AM
Wait wait wait... you say you need a hardware firewall because software firewalls aren't very secure. As far as I know, a hardware firewall is just a really stipped down computer running a software firewall and a telnet and webserver for configuration. Just like you can take an old 486 linux box and turn it into a firewall and router. That's all firewalls and routers are.
Posted By: Paragon Re: Firewall - 03/01/03 02:40 AM
Yeah, and it's much more secure having a router or seperate firewall box (stripped down as you said), than to go and run ZoneAlarm or Sygate or something on your box without one.

And you don't need the webserver for configuration, or telnet for that matter, you should use a secure protocol.

Hardware Firewalls (software portion):
Smoothwall
IP Cop

Software Firewalls:
Zone Alarm Pro

All reccommended by meh!
Posted By: Dreadlord Re: Firewall - 03/01/03 09:46 AM
Actually i thought something else bout hardwer firewall. That it goes by changing the shares also. Like not allowing any exploration hf->pc

So Zone Alarm Pro smile Thats where my vote would go.

What about AtGuard and BlackICE? (this last one looks like for those stupid ppl that only know to click one button)

But free/charged = dun care, theres plantly of sites with cracks smile

Now bout cracks, lots of ppl like to say that a cracked software is more bug-able = less reliable . I don't agree, who is right?
Posted By: Gremelin Re: Firewall - 03/01/03 10:03 AM
I hate AtGaurd and BlackICE, their shitty programs that do nothing compaired to most.

Cracked software is full version software.

Gibson Research Corporation, the producers of Zone Alarm suck, Zone Alarm sucks and the moron that runs that research corporation sucks even more.

If you want to know why the self proclaimed security expert, Steve Gibson, sucks so much visit

Waits for Gizzy to change his post from:
"Software Firewalls:
Zone Alarm Pro
All reccommended by meh"
To:
"Software Firewalls:
Sygate Pro
All reccommended by meh"
smile

Ok now, Gizmo can u break Zone Alarm Pro or not?
or Sygate Pro?

WHICH ONE?!
Posted By: Gremelin Re: Firewall - 03/03/03 12:15 AM
I'm still standing behind ZAPro, I like it, I always have, I don't judge software by people hating developers, look at microsoft for example.

I haven't broken ZAPro yet, I personally don't like Sygate as a company at all also.
Posted By: Paragon Re: Firewall - 03/05/03 09:38 PM
Sygate is better. Has fewer holes than other personal software firewalls.
Posted By: Gremelin Re: Firewall - 03/05/03 09:52 PM
I've yet to have any problems with ZA Pro. See, "holes" are what patches are for wink .

I'd still stear clear of SyGate, their not the best company, I've had a legit copy of their firewall since it first came out.
Posted By: Paragon Re: Firewall - 03/05/03 09:55 PM
"I'd still stear clear of SyGate, their not the best company"
Why do you say that?
Posted By: SilentRage Re: Firewall - 03/05/03 11:23 PM
cause there's always somebody better? so it would be rediculous to call SyGate the BEST company.... *snickers*
Posted By: Paragon Re: Firewall - 03/06/03 02:09 AM
But he said "steer clear of them" meaning they're more than a bit less than the best.
And to say there's always someone better is rediculous. At any given point there has to be someone who's the best. Maybe not the best in all situations, but overall, Sygate is pretty decent... for a personal firewall.
Posted By: Gremelin Re: Firewall - 03/06/03 09:36 AM
Ok, I've been using Sygate and ZA Pro since they both first came out. In that time ZA Pro was the one who updated more often and was the one with the less exploits developed for it.

See, I used to HATE ZA Pro until they worked some issues out. They used to have it so that when you had a reg entry entered that you could disable connections, so when developing programs we'd kindly have it drop a registry entry to disable their firewall.

Since then theive designed the firewall with an encrypted access list as well as worked out the majority of the bugs for their software within the first few days of it being reported.

SyGate used to pass off copies of its peice of [censored] firewall with their home networking program which would terminate after a certain time because it'd connect to their servers, when your license ran out you had to dish out another $40 to them for that too.

As a company their compaired best to Microsoft.
Posted By: SilentRage Re: Firewall - 03/06/03 02:30 PM
damn you paragon. Nobody was meant to reply to me. I was joking, - I made that quite clear with the snicker - but if you want to take a joke to seriousness...

"And to say there's always someone better is rediculous."

considering better/best are opinions then there's always somebody better in somebody elses opinion. Since it's a -duh- that many people would have a 'best' opinion, that is not in question. What's in question is that Gizmo considers a company the best, and it may not be your opinion. However, that is not the issue, the issue is WHY gizmo doesn't consider it the best. I was stating an irrelevent fact meant for HUMOR...
Posted By: Paragon Re: Firewall - 03/07/03 08:34 AM
OK.
Now that we have that cleared up, just a quick question:
Does ZA have DLL authentication?
Posted By: Gremelin Re: Firewall - 03/07/03 01:49 PM
I believe so.
