Are there any knoppix users out there? I am pretty sure we have a few atleast. I want some feedback on if the entire installation process and customization was worth it in the end, and why/why not?

i used it for a bit, but it never really impressed me. the only good thing about it, is that you can boot from a cd and still have a gui, but if you're installing it, then who cares? i think they have a gnoppix version out that uses gnome, but i ahven't tried it yet. bottom line i guess, if you're installing it, then as far as i know any other version will be just as good. if you're using it to boot from a cd (say to take linux on the go) i do not believe there is any other version that'll give you a gui. the only other one i know of is openwall linux, but i don't believe that has a gui.//

ya know, not to sound like a dumbass, but this is gonna make me sound like a dumbass. I tried Knoppix briefly, when I was considering Gentoo. I realized when you mentioned a few things, I was thinking of Gentoo when I posted this topic. Your feedback is still appreciated, I wasn't impressed with Knoppix much either.

Gentoo, anyone? smirk

Everyone in my MDLUG loves Gentoo, well not the noobs they are all over SuSE because of the ease of install but the people who know what they are doing love gentoo because it's soooo easy to update. The install is a bit rough but once its on I guess its a beautiful thing. Although it does take a long time, like 24 hours (so 'ive heard), to install on a cable connection because it downloads and compiles the source specifically for your machine/config. If you want a faster distro try Debian. It's just like gentoo with the updates but everything is precompiled wich makes updates/installs a lot quicker. the only thing is that it won't be as optimized for your exact system architecture.

What about optimization? I mean, according to your LUG, is it worth the time spent.

I love Gentoo. I have had it on my laptop now for a couple months and is by far my new favorite linux distro. The install too me the better part of a weekend, gnome alone took ten hours. It seems to run well on my laptop, and updating is amazingly easy. I have had no problems compiling anything, and it has damn near any program you can think of in the portage tree (portage is the updater program Gentoo uses).

Well worth the time, and I highly recomned you try it.
