Australian scientists have discovered that rotten bananas can provide enough energy to power 500 homes. The government has provided funds for the study which could see the 'rotten fruit idea' becoming a reality.

Australian Banana Growers' Council, said: "It's not a hoax." The bananas are combined with bacteria to produce methane. Pipes leading to the turbine would take the gas all the way to the electric grid.

Tony Heidrich added: "Essentially it's just like a big composting bin. It's a waste product and currently we're not doing anything else with it. This would harness the electrical capacity that it can bring."
