This should be in the *nix forum. Well to explain it simple. Unix is an operating system just as Windows. Bu mostly used on servers / mainframes. And very expensive. There also are free *nix clones out there. you have the bsd part (freebsd, openbsd and netbsd, the most common), Plan9 (pretty unknown but it's there somewhere ) and offcourse pretty known, linux (slackware, ...) So if you want to learn about *nix get yourself a few books about it and i'd suggest getting some linux flavor (linux distro) (cause linux still is the most easy form of *nix to start with) and start experimenting.
Never argue with fools... They will only drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience...

The dummies series will teach you exactly NOTHING about using *nix. About the only thing you'll get from them is a false sense of knowing what you're doing. Go check out "Running Linux" published by O'Reilly publications. That would be a good starting place. And if you would like a copy of Linux go to www.linuxiso.org . It could take ya a while to download depending on your connection speed. But DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on a Dummies book!!! When they say "Unix for dummies" they mean "Read this book if you are a complete idiot". And FYI: I have a copy of "linux for dummies". Saw it for five bucks and figured what the hell. That is $5 that I'm never gonna get back. Hell, I don't even want to use it as a doorstop cause then people will know I own it. sum

if u wanna learn Unix install this www.cygwin.com its sorta unix for windows, doesent have all the commands and options but it does teach you the basics another site is go to www.hackerslab.org its a site that's all about unix theres 17 levels and you have to find the pass to go to the next level. You connect through telnet, go through the site and it will explaine everything
