My card is not automatically detected. After doing some searching around I figured out that it requires the tulip module which I do have. I've tried adding the following to \etc\conf.modules

alias eth0 tulip

And tried the following:

modprobe eth0

then I get an error saying:

inet_module: device or resource is busy

not sure what do to about that, so anyway I create \etc\sysconfig\network-scripts\ifcfg-eth0 saying:

DEVICE=eth0
IPADDR=192.168.1.2
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes

and I try this command:

ifup eth0

It says something about the initialization is being delayed...

I try the ifconfig command and see that nothing has changed - nothing is working. So then I try this command

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

then it returns an error saying "eth0" is unknown or something to that affect...

I've tried rebooting, and in the boot messages it says that the ethernet card is using an unknown tulip-style whatever and I see the delayed initialization...

well, I'm just screwing around on this thing and not getting [censored] to work - any suggestions? I am running RedHat 6.1 without gnome or kde.

Hmm what card is this? Sadly not all work. Also do check out if there are linux drivers from the manufactor website... It's confusing, yet it seems like it's already been like setup but just incorrectly, it wants you to almost delete and reinstall properly... Also just for the hell of it maybe you want to upgrade from 6.1 to like 7.0 or even 8.0, it's just works a bit better. I'll try to look into it when I'm not falling sleep or needing more energy drinks.

for reasons I don't want to explain, I'm sticking with 6.1 for awhile. So humor me.

yes, I already know this card will work for linux and I already know it uses the tulip driver. I've read about some guy who explained how he got this card from SBC for DSL (just like I did) and managed to figure out that tulip worked just fine with it.

So yeah, it's configuration problems.

FYI: Card = KINGSTON KNE111TX/SI

I've done some more reading, and learned how to list all the loaded modules as well as how to remove modules and take down a ethernet interface. So I'll try those things to get more info - or maybe even get it to work.

well, I suppose there's no help for me. I went to irc.linux.org and asked my question there and got somebody who knew what I was doing. Turns out I also knew what I was doing cause I was doing everything right and still the damn card wasn't being recognized.

so now I try to upgrade my 2.2 kernel to 2.4

I'm about to go search on google to figure out how to do this - but if anybody would like to tell me how - I'll be reading that as well.

I dont know if you've solved the problem yet or not, but one thing you might want to try is turning off plug n play in your bios it can cause hardware not to be detected and conflicts with irq's under linux. Then you might need to recompile. You might need to anyways now that you have the new modules installed because they weren't initially installed.

nah, part of the problem is that tulip could not be loaded for some strange reason. Other than that, the kernel wasn't able to recognize my card.

As for upgrading the kernel... I know I can upgrade to a new revision number - from 2.2.12 to 2.2.17 - without recompiling - still need to do more reading to see if I can go further than that.

Errr that is the one thing I really hate when I use to be a technician... It's drivers, they can be such a pain in the [censored]. So ya you can try the kernel, also like I said Distro and version type can make a diff but I know you want to stick with 6.1, yet I've seen and heard of different distros being more compatible with some things then others. I would contact Red Hat or the card manufactors and see what they say. Don't use Tulip, errr ya sry bro, I'll see what I can find tonight.

Trust me, tulip is the right driver. Not only did that previously mentioned website say to use tulip for that specific card - but on irc.linux.org I just happened to be helped by a guy who HAS my specific card in his machine he was using right then. And guess what? He is using the tulip driver. He also got support for his card compiled into his kernel, but anyway...

Now, why are we suppose to trust you? No one is doubting you, face it... Some machines have a mind of their own, I'm telling ya they do. They are made by humans and worked by humans, the sad things are we aren't perfect, I still have nont adbonded you, I shall look but I got an expo for work wed so I got [censored] piled so high you need wings to stomp on it. We'll tackle this together.
