This is a link to a forum that has a whole lot of interesting stuff to say about microsoft - it's future plans (scary) and more useful information about the their software in general. Gotta check it out. Very informative.

#boycott-ms on efnet

I say we either support this or start our own. There are other platforms and other OS's out there that would love support, and would probably back up a boy cot.

This would mean boy cot every M$ product.

Office
Windows
Money
IIS
Front page
ect ect ect ect.

I am going to try to contact the guy starting the boy cot and put up a support page on my site, if anyone else is intrested and has a site. contact me. I am going to try to put togetther a network of people willing to post info and get some sort of slogan and banner we can all use.

I have email Chris on New order and asked if he would like to host a boycot site on my site

http://www.WeThe.com (nice ring to it)

I am looking for something before this kicks off guys.

Links to any open source project you know of. I want to contact every developer out there that will be hurt by this if it kicks off and get their support.

To do this we would have to show a united front. if most of the open source sites out there provided info on how this would kill them, and how it would kill free software and how to not kill software it just might have an affect.

M$ is kinda taking a risk here. If this fails before it ever takes off they are in deep [censored].

Gizzy want in on this?

Its not right, I'll support the boy cot and links on my site, etc about it. [censored] M$, they can keep their [censored], I wanna [censored] stab bill gates in his [censored] forhead and they tar and feather his supporters.

would this not violate some sort of law against monopolys? i know microsoft has undergone investigation for that in the past, but wouldn't the government be forced to step in if microsoft gained this much control?

Well, I finally read the article. Wow huh? I certainly have my doubts that it'll happen, but I think there's a significant chance that it will. It kinda sucks. Boycott MS? That's a joke. Sorry to crash your hopes in such a tactless fashion, but it won't amount to anything.

What will I do? I'll wait and see what happens. I'll keep my ears and eyes open to monitor the changes in how things go. If I see a way of subverting the system, then I'll go on. If everything happens as microsoft wants it, that's the end of my recreational programming and webdesign. It's the end of using software and playing mp3's I'll never pay for. It may be the end of my interest in the computer.

I used to be against microsoft being broken up by the courts. Now I'm all for it.

It will b the end of computing if im that restricted unless i get a $100,000 job or something but first i will customize my new benz with that kinda money wink .

Im with Moff there, and ever since i heard about this ive talked to several people and they all agreed if microsoft does this the internet will be changed forever and i doubt anyone will welcome this. There was a post on another BBS about this and one response i thought was completely true,

It bugged me on New order and bugs me here. Gad damn it, if you are going to quote someone,

1.) Give thier god damned name

2.) Get it right.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

There are some better quotes that apply a bit better I think.

Now I have been pondering on this, Is it realy that bad? Think about it. The Net would be split into 2.

one side essintially owned by Microsoft
one still free and open.

All the linux servers out there will not run out and all the sudden by this version of windows or upgrade their hardware. IBM has no love for Microsoft, nor dose Sun Microsystems. Right there are 2 harware vendors that just may come out with a hardware solution.

Software alternatives are already inplace. The way I see it, you would have a corperate net under Microsoft... And a net were open source projects and such can flourish. Might even be better...

Do you realy think Apple servers will all the sudden be replace by these Microsoft/P.C. ones? How about other platforms?

Spark stations
Alpha
Apple
http://www.transmeta.com

All of these platforms are still compatable with each other on the net... So word documents will not be able to transfer on the free net. So we use the new standard for the free net.

This could actualy be a chance for some companies to sell a cheaper product with more freedom. I mean when Micrsoft starts deleting out MP3's and porn these other OS's and platforms will have a new found intrest in them.

Now maybe I'm playing Devil's advocate here. I mean just yesterday I was going to start a boycot. But I can easily see 2 nets, and no Microcrooks on te free net.

I didn't know there was a such a strict policy on quotation. It wont happen again.(also i was quoting Benjamin Franklin i was just repeating what I'd heard on from someone on another board)

Yea I saw that post. He was said one of our for fathers (I forget which one.)

That was the quote he was referring to. It's just if you are going to quote someone... Do it right. Not necessarily a flame on you man. Just a pet peeve of mine.

hey learner, that had a big impack on me... i was thinking the same, microdick can suck other peoples [censored] and go their own way while we could stay on the free net and support it, help, and not [censored] about. MS could [censored] us temp but i think we could live through it and help build and support the free net. We dont need them (althou i do like and use alot of their apps and oses).

that would be awesome, creating a new internet i doubt it will even be slow this is the chance every company who tried to sue microsoft has been waiting for if they help pay for a more linux/mac dominated internet many will switch from windows if microsoft's plan works who knows if enough people switch Microsoft may even go out of buisness course Bill Gates still comes out on top im sure he has a few billion tucked away. Then again theres always the possiblity they dont get the OS into the market and things stay the same

so either way, if things stay the same it would b nice but if [censored] changes then we all get rid of microsoft and scooter down the free/open internet and live happy and support it and say [censored] u M$ and get supporters and [censored] MS over and live happily ever after. Either way... id b a adventure if the OS goes to market.

Well, honestly, I don't think it will happen. I mean, it's possible, but highly unlikely. Not enough people would agree with it. All the Unix/Linux servers out there would work fine. People would switch over rather than paying a ton of money. It's just pretty unlikely. It would suck the big one if it happened. But I don't think we have too much to worry about.

i think home users less experienced than us would highly not switch to another OS, I used to love windows and i still do but i think i can handle the change but bussinuess people like my uncle and other fmaily and friends would probably not switch... but they can upgrade and live with the [censored], Im not. I think there will b alot of people that will probably switch but i think the majority of them will stay with M$. I was raised on windows.. it would b a challenge for me to switch.

haha, this will not happen for three reasons.
One:
Microsoft is a company. Companys need to make money. With Microsoft's stock declining in recent dates they cant afford a huge marketing fluke.

Two: The reason it will not be successful is because the OS doesent allow you to do certain things. These things happen to be the major reasons non-computer-minded individuals buy PCs.
Therefore, M$ is narrowing its market down to businesses. This is a double-edged sword. What would a corporation like more than to finally insure their computer-related personel is working?
But a market so small will not produce the fantastic profits windows has incurred in the past.

Three: M$oft would be putting themselves in legal jeopardy. If they release this software they will be proving they are in fact trying to control content. This may not be as illegal as it is un-ethical, but it will surely give the Justice Department and other compaines a stronger case.

I read a very interesting point on another board about the theory on the new internet they said that linux servers would do what microsoft said so they get "security money" or somthing like that

/me wonders how many people in the DoJ bill paid off.

I think that if this did start to happen, if people told other people that they could get a free os just like they can get a free mp3 or movie, then they would consider it. Now, learning to use it would take time but I don't know.

At first, before reading Learner's post, I thought "Ok well I will just never use computer's again if this is how it is going to end." But then, i realized, "Hey, that could work." So now if it does start happening, then I am replacing windows with linux and figuring it out as I go...then here comes the family to ask me how to do things I am learning myself.

As much as we can create and advance it is just more that can be taken away.

*note, I edited "DoD" to read "DoJ" because I mean Justice not Defense.
